Taken from my picture-book "Tlacuache, Historia de una cola" The story was written by Efren Ordonez, and it was inspired by an ancient pre-Hispanic legend, where the animals of the Earth once gathered to discuss the plight of humanity. They were keenly aware of the hardships faced by men and women due to the absence of a vital element: fire. In response, the tlacuache, or opossum, vowed to retrieve fire from the underworld.
